What is the difference between the Memory Compiler and the specific memory functions and when should I use each one? - What is the difference between the Memory Compiler and the specific memory functions and when should I use each one?
Description The Memory Compiler is intended to be used when a certain functionality of memory is needed (ie. 2-port random access memory (RAM) or dual clock first-in first-out (FIFO)). The Memory Compiler automatically instantiates the appropriate memory function based on the options you choose in the MegaWizard® pages. The specific memory functions (ie. altsyncram, dcfifo) should be used when you know specifically what that function offers and is required by your design. Directly instantiating these memory functions is a legacy methodology. Moving forward, Altera® recommends instantiating memories using the Memory Compiler so that device migration is seamless and your design is more flexible.
