I am using Modelsim DE and was initially using v10.7b but ran into compilation issues. So the FAE asked me to go to v10.6e. But recently I was told that Intel was still at 10.5b. That kind of looked confusing info and hence am checking. These versions are customized for Intel(Altera) FPGAs and CPLDs and come with the device libraries pre-compiled. If using the standard ModelSim versions from MentorGraphics, you can use any version 10.1 - 10.7c. You will have to manually compile all FPGA and CPLD device libraries for ModelSim in order to do a design simulation. It's just ModelSim/Questa/whatever. The cheaper or OEM versions have design size limits, or are restricted to 32-bit systems.
